Manheim Tennis Club - 2023:   Historian's Report

- USTA Team - We had, for the first time in the club's 120 year old history, a woman's team in a USTA league. Managed by club members Rene Battista & Nancy Hanula, the team won the Central Penn Division 6.0 Ladies Championship, qualifying to compete in the USTA sectional championship in Princeton, NJ. They did not win sectionals but ended the year very successfully. The team was made up of 17 members, all over the age of 40. Team members were Jennie Barbieri, Rene Battista, Erika Bodell, Jill Brenneman, Roberta Brummel, Amanda Christman, Sandra Crespo, Terri Emler, Laura Fiore, Jacqueline Francis, Nancy Hanula, Suzan Jaskulis, Amy Kauffman, Dorothy Love, Megan Maurer, Victoria Miller and Susan Wolf.

 - Central PA Doubles League (Monday night league) team, managed by Steve Berkley, ended the 2023 season in 5th place. Racquet Club West ended the year with the best record  and Lancaster Country Club won the season ending playoff.

- Creek Cup - We did not play at Bent Creek this year because of construction work at their club. (They eliminated 2 Hard Tru courts and added 4 hard courts under a bubble.)

- Walker Cup (Interdistricts) - Steve Berkley captained the Central PA team, which won the Walker Cup by beating Delaware in the final match. Central PA won this match, losing all 3 singles matches but winning all 4 doubles matches (3 of them in 3rd set tie breakers with scores of 10-8, 10-8 and 11-9 and the 4th match in straight sets.) Five MTC members played on the team; Berkley, Brown, Donell, Glatsky & Smuck.

- Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open - Three club members (Steve Berkley, Dick Fleming & J.D. Young) and Mark Royer played at this stadium in 2023.  The stadium was empty with no prize money. See Berkley for photos.

- Wednesday Morning Doubles League- Like last year Denny Keller scheduled the matches. The season lasted 26 weeks with only 1 rainout.  56 different players played making up 285 different teams. There were 168 matches which included 57 3rd set tie breakers & 23 regular tiebreakers. Denny tries to schedule different members together as best he can.
